Stammler February 13th , 2014 Love in university life Having always lived in India, I spent the first seventeen years of my life under my parents guidance until I had to leave for a country on the side of the globe, literally. After my parents came to Long Beach and got me settled in my room, they went back to India leaving me here with two boys whom I had never known in my life, who were now going to be my roommates for the coming 10 months. This essay is a summary of me, a young introverted boy experiencing love for the first time in my new university life and how I dealt with it. I had no idea that in this hustle of settling down at a new university in a new country, I would start liking a girl so much that I would be thinking of her all day, every day. But I didnt know what I had to do about it. I did not know if should man up and voice my liking for her to her before its too late or just keep quiet and leave this on our destiny. Living in the dorms introduced me to the concept of sharing a room with people of my age. I had never cohabitated in such a small space with three people before. I didnt know my roommates or anyone in this university. I had thought that my roommates were shy of talking to new people of completely different background. But I started attempting to talk to them as I did not know anybody else apart from them then. I got to know about their interests, their likes and dislikes. However, I did not like their sleeping habits. They would sleep in the day and stay awake all night when everyone else was sleeping. This was a pain at times because I couldnt study properly in the dark. I wanted to talk to him about the problems I have been having with them but I was too afraid to talk to them. The fact that I was a shy person only added to the communication barrier that already existed because of our cultural differences. They were different from me and because of the difference in our cultures and religion, it was difficult for us to get along. I had never imagined I would have deal with racist behavior after having heard about such good things about the American culture prior to coming to the United States. However uncomfortable I was, I never voiced my opinions to them about their messiness and about them having thoughts about me just because I was an Indian. Anyway, so after a few weeks of solitary confinement with just my roommate for company, I had started hanging out in the multi-purpose hall, or known as the common hall. Initially, I was just a person sitting awkwardly in a room full of people. Then slowly when I started talking to people I learnt that its not too difficult to make new friends in a different country. Its just the first urge that is difficult. Slowly and steadily I got more and more conformable with people here. I also got to know that most of the people here actually love Indians and wished to know more about them and their culture. This made me more confident because I knew that it was just my roommates that were slightly hesitant to talk to Indians and it was not something that everyone else followed too. I then started talking to new people and would just walk up to them and start talking to them because I started to know how things work here. I wouldnt have got to know about social etiquettes as much as I did, had I been living off campus with my cousin who studies at the same university. Dorm life has its own advantages and disadvantages. Its way easy to make friends while living the dorm life as compared to living off campus because the dorms built me a good circle of friends by the end of my first semester that I would have been unlikely to meet on a campus of

Most classes, especially at the middle school and high school level, are intended to allow for mistakes since the point of the class is to teach you the material and not to weed you out. The ethnicity or race of an individual may or may not have an effect on their propensity to abuse or not abuse animals. To prove or disprove this initial hypothesis, it would be necessary to select an equal group of individuals from every possible racial background. For example, 25 men and 25 women between the ages of twenty and forty would be selected from each racial background. These groups would include Caucasian, African American, Latino and Asian. These groups would all be blind to what the study was about. The groups would be kept separate by race and monitored in a facility for one week. Each individual would be placed with a dog. Each individual would be monitored for the duration of the week. The dogs would also be monitored. At the end of the week, the following would be determined: The behavior of the dog as compared to the behavior at the beginning of the week; the number of times each person fed, watered, petted or spent time with the dog (walking the dog etc); and of course any abuse or neglect would be determined. The possible problems with this study would be age variation in the individuals as a possible factor, whether or not each person was a "dog" person or not, whether or not the person avoided displaying abusive behavior due to feeling "watched" or observed. Possible challenges for this particular method of study might include the fact that there are several variables within the study such as both women and men. The question of whether or not males are more likely to abuse animals as opposed to females could be posed. Another variable to consider is whether the individuals in the study had been abused as children as this may play in to their tendency to be abusive as adults. Also, the fact that this study is not being conducted on a large scale may be a challenging factor. However, the relatively small size of the groups should keep costs low and should therefore be within reach. Finally, religious background could be a variable not foreseen or considered. If an individual is of Hindu faith, they will revere animals as much as human life and therefore possibly be that much less susceptible to abusive behavior towards animals. A solution to this variable dilemma may be to only select individuals of non religion. If individuals have no religious beliefs, this may even out the subjects that are being studied, that much more. Other religions, such as Santeria customarily perform animal sacrifice and therefore may view animals in a less than ethical way. Hypothesis 2. The occurrence of domestic violence and animal abuse may be correlated. If domestic abuse is more prominent in a particular race, then animal abuse must also be. Dear Diary

A few days ago, I ran into these strange-looking witches that had brought forth a prophecy that I hadn't believed. The prophecy stated that I shall replace Duncan, my King, from his title. This news was indeed compelling but Just the thought of ever replacing the King was something I could never do. I had to share this news with someone, so I went to the one person I trust more than anyone in this world, my wife. She was delighted to hear that I could be named King, but seemed devastated that I was hesitant on taking a type of action that could gain me the throne.I had been persuaded by my wife into assassinating the king and taking his crown. Ever since then my life has changed enormously. These past few days have been like a nightmare for me, a nightmare that I have to live in until my last breath. In order to remain king and keep the title in my family, I must take action towards the people who have the ability to that away from me. Therefore, my best friend, Banquet, and his sons must be eliminated because the prophecy from the witches had stated that his sons will be the true heir of the throne rather than my sons when they are born, which I can't let, happen.I can't kill again; the circumstances this time around are different than before. I am the king now, and after everything I had gone through Just to get this title I can't Jeopardize that. While it is said to have originated in Africa and is mostly predominant in African Americans, sickle cell disease is now common among different ethnic groups all over the world. Sickle cell anemia (HbSS) infects â€Å"an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 Americans†(Housman) and accounts for approximately 70% of anemia in the United States. Hemoglobin functions as an oxygen carrying protein as it carries oxygen from the lungs through the arteries and to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin can be found in two different states. The first state is known as the T-state when it is tense and oxygen deprived. The second state is known as R-state when is relaxed and oxygenated. Hemoglobin first binds to oxygen then transports it to blood vessels, which have low oxygen levels. After it releases the oxygen the blood vessels, the red cells then transports carbon dioxide (CO2) from the tissues to the lungs where it picks oxygen once more. Cooperativiy, Affinity, and Efficiency When a subunit binds to oxygen, it changes it conformation and sends messages to other subunits to bind to oxygen as well. When more hemoglobin monomers (subunits) bind to oxygen, it is increasing hemoglobin’s affinity to oxygen, thus leading to better cooperativity. It was also discovered that there is a higher affinity for purified hemoglobin rather than the hemoglobin inside the red blood cells due to the anionic compound 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG). This molecule binds to hemoglobin in a small pocket only found in the T state when it is deoxygenized and allows it become stable. It further causes a reduction in hemoglobin’s affinity to oxygen, working out in its favor. During the transition from T to R state, the pocket containing 2,3-BPG is broken and
